Where Is Shëngjin?

Shëngjin is a beach town on Albania's northern Adriatic coast, in Lezhë County, about an hour and a half north of the capital, Tirana. It sits where a long sandy shoreline meets a small working port, with the Rënc hills rising behind it and protected lagoons spreading away to the south. To find it on a map, start at the inland town of Lezhë and move roughly eight kilometers west until you hit the sea. Shëngjin marks the northern end of Albania's developed coast, sitting closer to the Montenegrin border than to the Riviera. The water here is the warm, shallow Adriatic, a long way in feel from the deep Ionian of the south. The town is best known for its beach, one of the longer sandy stretches on the northern coast, and for the Kune-Vain lagoon reserve beside it, a quiet expanse of wetland, pine, and birdlife. It has drawn Albanian holidaymakers for decades and, lately, visitors arriving overland from the north. In summer it fills; once the season ends, it empties just as fast. Placing Shëngjin properly means seeing that it sits at the opposite end of the coast from the places usually tied to Albanian seafront living. The northern Adriatic, running from Shëngjin down toward Durrës, is flat, sandy, and built for volume. The southern Ionian coast, around Vlora and below, is mountainous, pebbled, and far harder to develop. One country, two shorelines that behave nothing alike.
